Jukhee Kwon, Russell Maurice

La Scatola Gallery in association with GX Gallery presents ‘Works on Paper’, a group exhibition with artists Jukhee Kwon, Ji Hee Kim, Russell Maurice, David Paredes, Sarah Tew and Gyeong Yoon An.

For Paul Klee, “a drawing is simply a line going for a walk”, for Henri Matisse “Drawing is like making an expressive gesture with the advantage of permanence”, for Salvador Dali a “drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possibility of cheating. It is either good or bad”, for Henry Moore “Discipline in art is a fundamental struggle to understand oneself, as much as to understand what one is drawing.”

Drawing, to each of these masters, is an entity with a specific meaning; their opinions overlap and contrast, an array of different interpretations for something used by almost every person who calls themselves an artist. But drawing as a form of expression belongs to everyone, in our most basic note taking and the beginnings of an education; our development of ideas, expression and communication can all be found in the meeting of pencil with paper, tools to facilitate connections both with ourselves and with others or outside elements.

These six artists deliver their own interpretations of drawing as a form of art, their visual conversation with this medium manifested in any number of ways. Within this show they will present their own individual practice, personal and unique, through something so universal as a piece of paper and a pencil.
