La Scatola Gallery in association with GX Gallery presents Tal Regev’s first solo show DEPART, at a point when painting is finding its position renewed; Regev is at the forefront of this.
Tal Regev’s work arrests the viewer, a moment of trauma seen in its vibrant colours, with a physicality not often so well executed in contemporary painting. She is involved in the practice of remembering, and relating; in these works we find a repressed moment, a collective or personal memory. It is at the point of the re-emergence of pain that Regev’s work stands, within an intimate and blurred reality; the quiet grip of a shared tension.
Army helmets and gas masks become part of a circus like scenario, a theatrical and almost ridiculous space where bodies meet and open up a veiled story. Bold and visceral gestures aim to suggest a recognition within the viewer of an over blown, tragic, intimate scene, a self-contained drama.
Raised in Israel and now resident in the UK, Tal Regev studied at Goldsmiths College. She has exhibited both in London and internationally, and was shortlisted in 2011 for the Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4’s New Sensations. Regev is represented by La Scatola Gallery.
Tal Regev has been included in NOW & FUTURE: JAPAN: A live auction by Christieʼs on March 2012. She is the youngest artist included in the auction alongside works by Yoko Ono, Marina Abramovic and Antony Gormley.
